CELEBRATING 130 YEARS OF MOTHER GERINE’S ENTRANCE INTO THE FULLNESS OF GOD.
It was not the usual Saturday at the International Novitiate for Africa-Sangotedo that people gathered on Saturday, 18th November, 2017. It was rather in honor of our dear foundress-Mother Gerine Fabre that we came together to celebrate not only her “departure” from this earthly life but her faithfulness, humility, audacity, total abandonment to God and our heritage as well.
The great day begun with the solemn celebration of Lauds, followed by the message from our Prioress- Sr. M. Alessia Spinelli just before breakfast. She addressed us in these beautiful words, "Today is the feast of our Mother Gerine, it is our feast, the feast of our Mother, let us all be happy and celebrate. Let each of us ask for the grace to imitate the spirit of Mother Gerine especially to have the courage to face the challenges of life just as she did”.
After breakfast, preparations for our visitors (friends of the Dominican Sisters) kicked off! Sisters and Novices at work together! Sr.Alessia Spinelli and Sr. M. Francisca Onyebuchi were in charge of the cooking, Sr. Anthonia Nwabueze and Novice Josephine Babirye arranged the Altar, Novice Florence Namanda and Postulant Paska Akello prepared the dining room, Sr. M. Teopista Akugizibwe and the two postulants (Joy Thungu and Beatrace Ntegeka) prepared fruit salad and green salad. It was a beautiful moment!. When all was set, we all went to our rooms to get ready for the Eucharistic Celebration which was led by none other than the confessor of the novitiate house-Rev. Fr. Gabriel Odin, OP.
In his homily, Fr. Gabriel hailed Mother Gerine for her compassionate and daring spirit, humility, justice, transparency, love for the Dominican life and all her daughters, her total dependency and trust in God as revealed in her tireless repetition of the words "God will provide”. Fr. Gabriel concluded his summon by emphasizing that Mother Gerine gave her entire life for the poor through intensive union with God in Prayer.
Shortly before the final blessing, Sr. M. Francisca Onyebuchi OP welcomed our guests to the occasion. She also presented our charism, the mission of the community of Sangotedo and the project of the delegation of our Lady seat of Wisdom. She did this in a most precise and concise way.
Sr. M. Teopista Akugizibwe OP followed with a brief presentation on Mother Gerine’s life, her relevancy in our world today and the legacy she left for all her daughters most profoundly in Deeds and not so much in words. The Eucharistic celebration was concluded with the final blessing and a hymn to Mother Gerine most recently composed by Rev. Sr. Lucy Nabukeera, OP (Uganda).
After Mass we had lunch with our guests, it was indeed a moment of joy and sharing. A rosary blessed by the chief celebrant was given to each participant including the sisters and the novices as a symbol to mark the event. Thereafter, our guests returned to their homes grateful.
May this tradition of celebrating the life of our foundress thrive in all our entities, and so aid us to find new ways of continuing to manifest the maternal compassionate face of God to all people in simplicity and humble service experienced in our daily personal and communal encounter and ever deepening union with Jesus Christ.
TO GOD BE ALWAYS THE GLORY!!!
